Robert Williams, DB
(5-10, 175, 4.5e) | North Carolina
Drafted by: Kansas City, Pick 5, Round 5, Overall 128 |
|
Notes: High-school football All-American. Also lettered in track and basketball. Was held out until Game Seven of his freshman year so he could redshirt, but then was pressed into duty and broke up four passes down the stretch. Second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference cornerback in 1996 and first-team All-ACC in '97. Had 28 tackles, 23 passes broken up and one interception in '96 and then picked off a pass and broke up three more in the Gator Bowl vs. West Virginia. Had 25 tackles, 13 passes broken up and two picks in '97. Williams declined to work out at the combine and said that he would do his workout at Carolina on a very fast timing and testing surface in late March. Positives: Has good man-on-man cover skills. Excellent balance, quickness and quick feet. Top closing speed. Breaks on the ball very well and breaks up an inordinate number of passes. Coaches say he is an even better man-on-man pass defender than two-time Tar Heel All-American Dre' Bly. Negatives: Williams is not very big or physical. Gets his hands on a ton of balls but does not pick off many. Ball skills may be slightly off and are not on the same level with Bly's. Williams looks small and almost frail and will miss some tackles. Summary: Looks like a good, little cover corner who can break on the ball. However, as a third-year junior, he probably would have been better served had he gone back to school for a fourth season. Information provided by Pro Football Weekly
