Victor Riley, OL
(6-4 1/2, 338, 5.52) | Auburn
Drafted by: Kansas City, Pick 27, Round 1 , Overall 27 |
Notes: Lettered in football, basketball, track and field, and wrestling in high school. Played
on both sides of the line in football. A Freshman All-American in 1994, when he started
eight games. Started only four games in '95. Started all but one game at guard in '96. Moved
to tackle in '97 and had his best season. Was a consensus All-Southeastern Conference
pick and a Coaches' All-America selection, although he was pulled from the Arkansas game
after being flagged for holding three times. Was viewed as an underachiever by his OL
coach and, at one point, was almost kicked off the team.
Positives: Fine size. Long arms. Big wingspan. Large, strong hands. Very athletic for a
320-pound man when he is in reasonably good shape. Has good body control and is light
on his feet. Understands how to use his big body and long arms. Effective pass portector
who generallyu keeps his man away from the quarterback and the ball. His opponent wil
rarely mkae a play. Has the strength to anchor vs. a bull rush. Can and has played
everywhere on the ofefsnive line except center. May be quick and athletic enough to play
left tackle on the next level. Was overweight at the Senior Bowl, yet still looked like he
could play left tackle, even at 338 pounds.
Negatives: Gets lazy about bending his knees and plays too upright. Is rarely a very
physical run blocker, in part because he is not bending his knees much and in part because
he does not work to finish all of his blocks. Has some lapses in concentration. Does not
always work as hard as he needs to and may not be as serious as he needs to be. Had a lot
of problems with his OL coach over the course of his career. Could be tougher and could
work harder. Tends to get too heavy. Is not a good workout athlete. May have lost some
points at the combine. Did not appear to be in shape to work out, and his athletic test
results were very poor.
Summary: Has first-round ability but needs to grow up and work a lot harder and to show
a lot more dedication if he is to realize his potential. As far as his ability, Riley is in the same
category as former teammate Willie Anderson.
